Continuing education for health professionals is essential for maintaining competence, self-confidence, career continuity, and the knowledge base for promotions. Continuing Education can be defined as any educational program designed to maintain the level of competence, knowledge, and skill necessary to perform the duties that are demanded in the update of medicine.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are earned through participation in seminars, in-house training, and response to the CEU Update publication or other schooling. Programs should last at least one hour and be presented by a qualified professional in the health field.

Class A Credits

Class “A” CEUs are units that are earned through the reading material that is provided through the NAHP’s publication of the CEU Update. The multiple issue publication is available at the link above or can be obtained by mail. Approximately one year after your initial registration, this issue will begin. The questionnaire that accompanies the CEU issue must be completed and returned for class “A” credit. Each completed CEU questionnaire will earn credits; you will not receive a grade on each questionnaire submitted. When returning your Class “A” newsletter for credit be sure you fill out the information completely. If it is received without a name and/or social security number, it will be discarded. A processor will not take the time to investigate a possible owner of such material. Your file will be reviewed annually only. You will be notified every year in your renewal letter as to the number of credits that have been earned.

Class B Credits

Class B CEUs are units that may be earned through any hands on learning experience or training, such as seminars, First Aid or CPR classes, or any activity that would constitute a hands on learning experience. Class “B” Credits are not provided by the NAHP. You must actively seek the hands on learning experience yourself. You can explore some continuing education units through local hospitals, your employer (general employment duties are exempt), and local community colleges. In order to receive Class “B” Credits, proof of participation must be provided. You can use the Class “B” Credit Form provided by the NAHP. Click here for the Class B Continuing Education Form. This file is in the PDF Format. Click here to download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you are using this form, please fill out all information requested, including the signature (this must be signed by a supervisor or the qualified professional who provided the class) and the total hours attended. Failure to provide complete information will result in no credit awards. Class “B” CEUs are units that are recommended but not required. However, upon completion of all 50 contact hours a certificate of achievement will be awarded.

CEU Requirements

CEU credits are earned in five-year blocks. You will need to earn 40 Class “A” credits and 50 Class “B” contact hours in the first five years of your registry. The first five years of your registry does not include your initial year.
